Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is medicine taken to prevent getting HIV, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV when taken as prescribed.
- PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.
- PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from injection drug use by at least 74%.
Monongalia County Health Department is currently taking appointments for patients interested in HIV PrEP. Patients will be seen by Haley Tucker, advanced practice nurse practitioner, in a welcoming and friendly environment.
During this appointment, patients will be tested for HIV and other lab work will be conducted. If HIV PrEP is right for you, you will receive a prescription. The patient will also return for routine follow-ups.
